Small Steps Create Big Shifts

Sandy Lemon has spent more than 30 years teaching people how to swing a golf club. On Wednesday, September 2, she has been asked to throw a baseball.

The Albuquerque Isotopes have named Sandy one of their “Women in Sports” ambassadors for Women in Sports Night at Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park. She will sit for a pre-game interview that runs on the videoboard, then throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Isotopes host the Tacoma Rainiers at 6:35 p.m.

Sandy is the Director of Instruction at Twin Warriors Golf Club and Santa Ana Golf Club, and she is one of the most decorated teachers in the Section. Sun Country has named her the Jack Hardwick Teacher of the Year twice, in 2009 and again in 2024. In 2021, Callaway selected her for the Ely Callaway Award, which she received as only the fourth recipient in the history of the award. She was inducted into the Callaway Hall of Fame in 2017 and has been a Callaway Master Staff Professional since 2013.

Before she came to New Mexico, Sandy spent 18 years as the head golf professional at The Landings in Savannah, Georgia. She has taught LPGA and PGA women’s clinics for more than two decades and has worked as a rules official at the PGA Championship.

The Isotopes built Women in Sports Night around the idea that girls and women belong in athletics at every level and at any age, whatever the degree of competition. Sandy has spent her career making that case on a driving range in Santa Ana Pueblo. On September 2 she gets to make it in front of a ballpark.
